How does the repository work?

What every traveller should have

• Passport with at least 6 months validity left and sufficient empty pages (typically 2 pages per country requiring a visa);
• Valid driver's license;
• Valid national vehicle registration document;
• Valid vehicle ownership document;
• Sufficient passport photographs.

• Forms that need to be filled in to obtain a document;
• Taxes payable at the border (amounts are mentioned in the description if applicable).

Topics are:

• Entry in country - what formalities are needed to enter the country;
• Extend stay in country - What formalities are needed to extend the stay of persons in a country;
• Permit - permit for a specific area;
• Drive own vehicle - import of a vehicle, but also insurance, driver's license, etc.;
• Extend vehicle import - keep the vehicle in the country for a longer period;
• Store vehicle while leaving - store vehicle in country while leaving.

Per topic the following entries are possible:

• Topic summary - summary of the conditions;
• Document details - a document is a required document such as an international drivers permit;
• Link to non-commercial information - link to a note with information from an official source such as a government;
• Link to commercial information - link to a note with information from a commercial source such as a supplier of insurance;
• Link to traveler feedback - a link connecting to a source of user experience information, often more anecdotal.

Validity of topics in this repository

Details about validity times of documents

• Permit validity start: first possible day of entry. This can for example be the date of issue of an entry document or a requested date;
• Permit validity duration: the period that the permit can me used. Examples are 90 days from date of issue until last entry, 60 days from validity start date until last exit, fixed start date;
• Allowance: maximum time that can be stayed in the country in a given period, for example maximum 90 days per year;
• Uses: number of times the permit can be used: single, double or multiple;
• Extendable: is the permit extendable, with summary of conditions;
• Arrival and departure count: do arrival and departure day as one or as two in the stay length calculation;
• Where to get: where can the permit be obtained? Examples are consulate abroad, on-line, in the country or at the border;
• Delivery time: what is the time needed to get the document?
• Costs: what are the costs of the document?

Traveller information

• Coming from: from where are you arriving? This can for example be a specific border or "airports only";
• Nationality: probably always relevant for entry in a country. It can of course be a group of countries such as "European Community". If an entry document is valid for nationals of all countries where most overlanders come from nationality doesn't have to be reported;
• Country of residence: can be of relevance for application for visas;
• Vehicle registration: Country where the vehicle is registered.
